Blurred vision is explained as the inability to see things clearly and with a lack of sharpness resulting in the patient being unable to see fine details.
There are many causes of this condition including medication, headaches, computer-based work, glaucoma, auto accidents, astigmatism and more.
If you are involved in computer-based work, this can cause blurred vision due to the prolonged periods of concentration and the fact that when you are working at the computer you are likely to blink less which leads to the eyes getting tired and in some cases, dry – particularly if you work in an air-conditioned environment. It is important to take regular breaks and if you need to wear glasses, that you ensure you do this as a vision impairment that is either unmanaged or undiagnosed can exacerbate the problem with blurred vision.
Other causes of blurred vision such as medication or medical conditions as mentioned above need to be discussed with your medical practitioner – it may be necessary to change your medication or, in the case of glaucoma or astigmatism, have correctional surgical intervention performed.
Some patients experience blurred vision only at night time, the cause of this is related to things such as how tired you are, whether you have astigmatism or glaucoma, what sort of environment you work in, if you are long sighted ( with these particularly, your eyes can generally compensate for the issue during the day but then become tired and unable to do so in the evenings). You may also be mildly short sighted – though you may not realise it a mild case of short sight can cause blurred vision to occur in lower light levels.
For all cases of blurred vision it is recommended that you have your eyes tested by a medical practitioner who may then refer you to a specialist or optometrist for further assessment and/or treatment.
Because blurred vision is not a disorder in its own right, it is a symptom of possible conditions that may be affecting the patient or environmental issues such as computer-based work, low-lit work areas etc.. It is important to first seek medical advice on why your vision is blurring and then begin to look at treatment once you have established the reason for it.
Treatment can range from simply taking regular breaks so that your eyes get rested, don't dry out and are not strained to surgical intervention to assist with the removal of things such as cataracts and medication to alleviate conditions such as glaucoma.
Your Optometrist may also suggest some eye exercises for you to do to help strengthen the eye muscles so that they do not get fatigued and cause the blurred vision or in the case of cataracts they may suggest a diet change – there is evidence that a diet high in anti-oxidents such as beta-carotene (Vitamin A), Vitamins C & D and Selenium may help to stall the development and/or further growth of cataracts where as a diet that is high in sodium(salt) will increase the risk of development or further growth.
