Irritability

Generally speaking, irritability is a reaction to something or someone that has given you reason to be annoyed and it is a normal reaction to stress or anxiety, however, if it is ongoing and frequent, it may be the effects of something else going on with your body or mind.

Conditions that can include both medical and pyschiatric disorders such as:

  • Bipolar
  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Personality disorder
  • Substance abuse
  • Withdrawing from alcohol, nicotine or drugs
  • Menopause
  • Premenstrual Tension and conditions that cause the central nervous system to be affected such as:
  • Brain tumour
  • Stroke
  • Meningitis
  • Dementia

Other conditions such as those that affect the amount of oxygen that goes to the brain are also known for causing irritability, such as lung infections and cardiovascular disease.

Treatment for irritability that is not caused by a medical or phsyciatric disorder or condition is reasonably simple – take yourself away from the person or situation if you can and spend some time out until you feel calm and able to return.

Conditions more serious that simply being annoyed at others or things that have happened, need to be diagnosed by a medical practitioner and treatment decided on in conjunction with the patient. If your own GP cannot diagnose the condition they may refer you to a specialist such as a psychologist or pyschiatrist who will work with you to determine the cause of your irritability and then recommend treatment for you.

Some treatment can include medications, rehabilitation, counselling and rest, this will vary depending on the condition that you are diagnosed with. For serious cases of pyschiatric disorder, it may be necessary for you to be hospitalised and monitored over a period of time so that the treatment can be tailored specifically to your needs.

If your irritability is accompanied by confusion, loss of consciousness – even momentarily, high fever, shortness of breath, rapid breathing, seizure, serious injury or irrational, threatening or suicidal behaviour you must seek IMMEDIATE medical attention and should call for an ambulance as these may be life threatening.

Prolonged irritability is of most concern to medical practitioners and patients alike, it is somewhat normal to be irritated by things, people, situations however should you find that you are not able to shake the irritability and more and more things are beginning to irritate you or you are feeling great one minute and completely annoyed and irritated the next, seek medical advice as you may be suffering from any one of the conditions talked about here and it is extremely important for treatment to begin as soon as possible.
