Lower back pain can be attributed to many causes however, most often it is linked to something general such as muscle strain or a diagnosable medical condition such as herniated lumbar disc or degenerative disc disease. More serious cases of lower back pain can be attributed also, to a condition such as a twisted pelvis and is often diagnosed incorrectly so treatment is not successful in alleviating the pain.
It is one of the most common conditions that lead to patients seeking medical assistance with statistics stating that at least four out of five adults will, at some point in their lives, experience lower back pain.
Often the severity of pain is unrelated to how extensive the physical damage may be, a patient may find that having a large herniated disc or a degenerated disc may cause them no pain at all however, a simple back strain can cause them incredible amounts of pain and they may find difficulty in walking or standing.
Medical Practitioners classify lower back pain in two ways – Chronic or Acute.
Chronic back pain is explained as: Pain that generally lasts for more than three(3) months and may be a constant low level persisting pain that increases in intensity or it may be a sudden flare up of pain that then settles to a low level constant pain. For this reason it is sometimes difficult to diagnose the exact cause of the pain.
Acute back pain is explained as: Pain that is sudden onset pain that lasts for a few days to a few weeks however, if left untreated this can become more serious.
Treatments for lower back pain vary depending on the condition diagnosed and the level of pain the patient may be in and/or level of mobility for the patient. Typically the immediate treatment recommended is the RICE method supported with anti-inflammatory over the counter medications, occasionally the medical practitioner may recommend a steroidal-based relief. Once the patient is comfortable enough to move the recommended treatment is physiotherapy or visits to our Oklahoma Chiropractor for further pain management.
Should a patient be diagnosed with a condition such as herniation of the disc or degeneration of the disc, surgical intervention may be advised, this is only done after thorough testing through the use of MRI, CT or XRAY.
If a patient experiences any of the following symptoms it may indicate a need for emergency surgery: Severe and ongoing/continuous lower back and abdominal pain weakening of the legs that is progressive or; Sudden bladder and/or bowel dysfunction
Medical practitioners also recommend that patients with a history of cancer who have experienced recent weight-loss, fevers or chills or have just suffered serious trauma, seek immediate medical attention.
