Mid-back pain is not as common as pain in other areas such as the lower back or neck areas, this is because it is a part of the back where the spine does not bend as much as they do.
Usually mid-back pain is a result of muscular and ligament strain or injury and is common in patients who have recently begun working out at a gym and have attempted to weight-bearing exercise and have lifted above their capacity.
Other factors that can contribute to mid-back pain are carrying excess weight around the abdomen area, not sleeping on a mattress that is too soft and not supportive enough and allows that area of your body to sit in an unnatural curve while sleeping. Not to be forgotten is bad posture also, not sitting up straight also sits your spine in a curve and can cause pain or discomfort in the middle of your back. Children can also suffer from this complaint if their school bags are too heavy on their shoulders so it is important to ensure that the amount of weight in the bag is not going to place overdue pressure on the childs' back.
Treatment for mid-back pain that is mild is reasonably simple and easy to do – it requires rest and using exercise to strengthen the muscles in that area, this can be done in conjuction with a physiotherapist or you can do some basic stretching on your own. Remember that exercise should not be attempted until you have completely rested and can move the area without pain.
You may also find relief from cold or heat packs on the affected area, gentle massage and anti-inflammatory tablets.
There are some situations where mid-back pain will be a symptom of a more serious, underlying condition and it is these that you will need to see your medical practitioner for and, which may result in surgical intervention. You should see your doctor if your pain is ongoing for more than a few days.
These are potentially serious and require medical attention as soon as possible.
If your medical practitioner believes that you may have a more serious underlying cause for your mid-back pain, they will refer you to a specialist for further testing, this may be MRI or CT or XRAY and from there you will be advised as to the best treatment option. Surgical intervention will only be suggested if the condition is extremely serious and no other options will help to sort the issue out.
