Numbness and Tingling

Numbness can occur anywhere on your body and is commonly felt in the hands, fingers, toes and feet, usually caused by nerve damage or lack of blood flow to the affected area. When the blood is flowing again the patient will feel a tingling or “pins and needles” sensation.

Numbness can be caused by things such as inflammation, trauma, infection and while most cases are not due to any serious or life-threatening conditions, it can be related to stroke, heart attack or tumour.

Occasionally the numbness may precede paralysis however, this is not common and if you should experience prolonged or chronic numbness it may be that you have sustained nerve damage that is serious – as in Multiple Sclerosis or Diabetes – or, nerve entrapment which is common in the medical condition Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is painful and may prevent you from performing daily routine duty such as lifting, typing, writing and even just picking up your coffee mug. If you feel you may have this condition it is important that you seek medical advice. You medical practitioner will refer you to a specialist for further testing and diagnosis/treatment. Treatment to correct this condition involves surgical procedure to release the entrapped nerve.

Because numbness, like so many other symptoms, is an indication that there is something else going on in your body, it is important to speak to your medical doctor for any numbness or tingling you have that goes on for more than a few minutes and likewise, if you experience a loss of bladder/bowel control, confusion, slurred speech, paralysis or a weakness in your extremities with the numbness you should seek immediate medical attention at an emergency clinic.

Some symptoms that may occur with numbness include:

  • Tingling or numbness after sitting in a certain position for a period of time – for example with your knees tucked under your body.
  • Anxiety
  • Muscle Spasm
  • Rash
  • Sensitive to touch
  • Frequent urinations
  • A burning feeling
  • “pins and needles”
  • Lower back pain
  • Pain in the neck
  • An increase in tingling or numbness when walking
  • Itchiness Pain in other areas of the body

Treatment of numbness ranges from as simple as getting the blood flow back into the area by movement to as complex as surgical intervention to correct or a more serious medical condition.

Your medical practitioner will advise you of the best course of action for you if you are experiencing on going numbness or tingling in any are of your body.
