Ringing in the Ears (Tinnitus)

The medical term for ringing in the ears is Tinnitus.

Usually Tinnitus is an indication that there is something else going on with your hearing or brain.

Hearing loss is the most common reason that a patient will have this condition and the most popular among medical pracitioners is that it is due to the damage of the cochlear or inner ear over the span of your life, meaning that those who suffer tinnitus will generally be in their later years. However, it is not uncommon for younger patients to also have the condition and this can be related to things such as hearing damage through industrial employment, drug use(when overdosed), ear infections and meniere's disease to name a few.

The medical profession also believe that it could be when the relationship between the cochlear and the brain breaks down and the cochlear is no longer sending messages to the brain which, in turn, becomes confused and starts to make up it's own sounds to deal with the lack of normal signal sounds.

If a patient suffers tinnitus in both ears it is usually diagnosed that there has been trauma suffered such as excessive noise, drugs etc.

Treatment of tinnitus is done after testing to diagnose whether or not there is an underlying, more serious condition in the patient that is causing the tinnitus. It is largely recognised that damage to the hearing in a patient is the cause of the tinnitus and in that view, the only thing that can be done is to reassure that there is no other, more sinister reason for it. If a patient is suffering from the tinnitus and finding it bothersome the following treatments are discussed with a medical practitioner:

  • Avoiding caffeine based drinks
  • Avoiding aspirin in large quantities
  • Prevention of further damage to the ear/s by using the appropriate protective gear when a patient is in an industrial place of work or if possible, avoiding loud places altogether.

For more severe reactions to tinnitus your medical practitioner may suggest:

  • Anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medication
  • Hearing Aide

It may also be as simple as having a radio, television or white noise machine on when trying to sleep – though this is thought to be effective if you suffer from it only when you sleep. It is important to note that tinnitus is not always severely bothersome and a lot of patients find that it only affects them when there is no other noise around them.

In cases where the tinnitus is caused by a severe, underlying medical condition the treatment depends entirely on treating that condition – such as a tumour or anurysm – once this is done the tinnitus generally disappears.
