Shoulder Blade Pain

There are a multitude of reasons that you may suffer pain in your shoulder blade/s, the most common being injury or strain due to sport, heavy lifting, stress, position whilst you sleep, exercise, posture when sitting or standing for long periods at a time, normal aches and pains or, even wearing a bra too tight!

However, there are some more serious conditions that could be underlying the pain in your shoulder and for that reason you should always seek medical attention if the pain is persistent.

These conditions can include:

  • Gall stones or Gall bladder disease – usually felt in the abdomen and rib area, it is not uncommon for a patient to feel discomfort in the should blade area also.
  • Heart attack – Pain in the shoulder blades is commonly cited by woman having a heart attack.
  • Oesophageal cancer – This would be referred pain also as with this type of cancer the common area would be the chest/throat area.
  • Liver Cancer – again, this would be referred pain due to the location of your liver.

As with any serious medical condition, it is best you seek advice from your GP and not use self-diagnosis. There are many treatments available for pain in the shoulder blade and your medical practitioner can diagnose and then refer you for further assessment with a specialist or other clinician.

The shoulder blade can also be bruised from physical impact such as playing sports, falling over or being pushed up against a hard surface, this kind of injury is best dealt with using a combination of cold and heat packs, you may also find a natural therapy such as Arnica cream useful as this helps to “bring out” the bruising and encourages faster healing.

If the pain is severe and you have a loss of movement you should go immediately to your medical practitioner to rule out a fracture, this will be checked on using Xray and your GP will refer you to the appropriate clinician/s to get a diagnosis.

It is also possible to feel pain in the should blade when you have damaged the Rotator Cuff in the shoulder, this would lead to a dull, uncomfortable pain in the blade as it forms part of that joint – if you suspect this you need to seek medical advice and diagnosis to get the injury treated correctly.
