Sport Injury and Treatment

The most common forms of sports injury are:

  • Hamstring Strain
  • Ankle sprain
  • Bruising
  • Mild Concussion
  • Dehydration
  • Knee joint Injuries
  • Stress fractures
  • Nose injuries
  • Groin strain
  • Dental injury and; Abrasions or cuts

Treatment, as with any injury, should be the immediate cessation of what you are doing and applying the R.I.C.E method, particularly in the case of Muscle strain or sprain. Other advice given is to:

  • Apply ice-packs to the affected area every couple of hours for 15 minutes for the initial 24-48 hour period following the injury and keep elevated above the level of your heart.
  • Firmly bandage the injury – be sure to wrap above and below the area also
  • Avoid heat, alcohol and massage – these things will increase the risk of swelling
  • Seek medical advice as soon as you are able to

Ongoing treatments for sports injury depends on what the injury is – occasionally, it may just be a simple case of resting the limb/area for a period of time and then ensuring that you return to the sport at a level of physicality that is minimal to help ensure a re-injury does not occur.

For more severe injuries such as hamstring, groin strain and damage to joints you MUST consult with your medical practitioner who will assess you and then refer to the appropriate specialist – in most cases a physiotherapist. This will not begin however, until such time as you have the ability to move without extreme pain so your doctor may prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication and pain relief to assist you while the injury is healing.

In some cases there may be a need for surgical intervention – this is only in serious cases and will only be diagnosed after thorough testing using xray, ultrasound, CT or MRI scanning.

It is extremely important that you do not return to the sport before your medical practitioner or clinician have given you the clearance to do so as you risk further or more serious injury if there has not been enough healing time.

Prevention is ultimately the best defence against sports injury and following are some things you can do to help prevent injury:

  • Have regular medical checkups
  • Warm up fully and properly before participating
  • Wear the appropriate safety gear for the sport you do
  • Strap or tape joints or areas that may have extra strain on them during the activity
  • Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after the activity
  • Wear appropriate footwear for your sport
  • Don't exert yourself beyond your physical capabilities
  • Cool down fully and properly after you have finished Maintain a high level of overall fitness

Sports Injuries are commonplace and very easily avoided by simply taking care of yourself pre and post activity and ensuring that your athletic ability is in line with the sport that you play.
